Cincinnati, Ohio || As of February 24, 2020, Global is pleased to announce the successful integration of Controller-Pilot Data Link Communications (CPDLC) onto a fleet of Boeing 767-300 aircraft. This project is covered under the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) ST04417CH and pending validation by the European Aviation Safety Administration (EASA).
Controller-Pilot Data Link Communications (CPDLC) is a text-based air/ground data link system. An aircraft equipped with CPDLC allows the flight crew and controller to communicate directly, without using general broadcast. As a result, this system greatly reduces the number of communication errors between flight crew and controller; ultimately, increasing the overall efficiency of communication between both parties; as well as, increasing the safety of every flight.
As of February 5, 2020, the European Aviation Safety Administration (EASA) mandates that most aircraft above FL285 operating within European airspace are required to be equipped with CPDLC (EC No 29/2009.) However, EASA has deemed some aircraft temporarily or permanently exempt from this mandate. A list of exemptions can be found here.
In conjunction with the Dlink+ system, the Iridium ICS-220A system was installed. The Iridium Satellite Communications System provides the combined capabilities of a dual-channel voice system and data communications through a dedicated Short-Burst Data (SBD) ACARS communication when controlled from the flight deck Multi-Function Control and Display Units (MCDU). This unique combination allows the ICS-220A to support simultaneous ACARS communication links over the iridium network as an approved secondary means of uninterrupted communication. The Iridium system was installed for the future upgrade of FANS 1/A+ which will be certified by Global late this year.
Through collaboration between Global, the FAA, EASA, and the customer, our team was able to design, integrate, and certify this system efficiently and safely.
